Design for Manufacturing:
In our spring semester of sophomore year at Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT), my professor believed it was time to look at product manufacturing cost and materials. The class was divided into three groups and each group had to focus on a different approach to manufacturing. The next step of the assignment was to design a bird feeder with the bird as the target audience.
The bird assigned to me was the northern Blue jay and the type of manufacturing assigned was vacuum forming. The outcome is a hopper style peanut feeder (a delicacy for the Blue jay) that keeps the nuts free from moisture while aiding the birds in removal of the nuts.
